Use a soft brush (we use a dusting brush with goat hair bristles) to gently clean the emulsion side of the plate. This removes dirt and any broken glass particles without scratching the emulsion. Don’t clean this side with water–that would risk washing off the emulsion!

How are black and white glass negatives scanned?
This also minimises scratches to both negative and scanner glass. We scan emulsion side up so that the image appears in the correct orientation and black and white negatives are scanned using colour settings in RGB to hold more digital information.
