What to do if you want to donate to a museum?
While the museum does not accept “unsolicited donations” or “drop-offs,” we are happy to work with you to schedule time to evaluate your potential donation. In general, the best thing to do is to send an email or letter to the Curator or Collections Manager, along with photographs and descriptions of the offered material.
Can a firearm be donated to a museum?
Unless there are compelling and legitimate reasons, items containing hazardous materials are not accepted (for example, firearms, asbestos containing objects, explosive, poisonous, radioactive material). If your donation is suitable for the collection, is in good condition with good title, we will accept it for the collection.

Can a museum take an object on loan?
We cannot acquire material where current ownership is unknown or could be disputed. Items are not commonly accepted with specific conditions attached. The Museum does not typically accept items on long-term loan.
How does a donation to a museum work?
The official document that transfers ownership of the object (s) from you to the museum is called a Deed of Gift. All paperwork relating to a donation is filed in the collections records of the museum in perpetuity. Once the Deed of Gift has been signed, donations cannot be returned to the donor.

At the very least, you should make an appointment instead of simply dropping off your items. Behind-the-scenes at a museum can be quite busy, and even though you might have a wonderful object to donate, it may not be possible for the staff to drop what they are doing to talk to you.
